I think we can all agree that Pepsi needed the win.
The beverage company has had a rough go of it lately, thanks to the Kendell Jenner commercial mocked ‘round the world. But their latest offering seems to be hitting the…give us this one…right notes with a song that has garnered over 20,000 hits on Shazam in a week.
To see what else has been sparking Shazam-fueled curiosity this week, see below and adjust your playlists accordingly.
1) Pepsi “Refreshing”
Track: “Stay” by Zedd and Alessia Cara
It’s been a good start to the summer for the duo of German/Russian producer Zedd and Canadian singer Cara – their collaboration “Stay” was certified platinum on May 26th,and it inclusion in this Pepsi spot is garnering it even more ears via Shazam.
2) Apple iPhone 7 Plus “Barbers”
Track: “Fantastic Man” by William Onyeabor
This track was #3 last week, and is making moves up the list. It’s a great, bouncy summer song and the accompanying ad is both stylish and effective—tell us you don’t want an iPhone 7 after watching it.
3) Coca-Cola “Share a Coke At The Beach”
Agency: Wieden + Kennedy
Track: “Classic” by The Knocks (feat. Powers)
“It was the summer time/that summer high/oh what a masterpiece.” See? You don’t always have to overthink these things.
4) University of Phoenix “We Can Do IT”
Agency: 180 LA
Track: “Dreams” by Beacon Street Studios
An even-dreamier version of The Cranberries’ 1992 hit “Dreams” underscores this ode to the life-changing power of education. It’s not a party track, but it hits the heart strings 100%.
5) Samsung Galaxy S8 “Breaking Out”
Agency: Leo Burnett
Track: “African Harvest (Theme)” by Nalin Inc.
Samsung continues to get attention with this thumping track, courtesy of German mixing/producing team Nalin & Kane.
6) State Farm “Following”
Track: “Don’t Let Me Down” by Joy Williams
State Farms’ blatant attempt to remind you that warm weather doesn’t make you immune to feels has moved up from #9 last week.
7) Subaru “Making Memories”
Agency: Carmichael Lynch
Track: “Time Will Tell” by Gregory Alan Isakov
Just in time for Father’s Day (and high school graduation season), comes the perfect song/commercial combination to make every Dad out there a little wistful.
8) Samsung Galaxy S8 “Travel Guide: Netflix”
Track: “Soy Yo” by Bomba Estereo
A commercial about getting up and going needed a song that got you up and going. Colombia’s Bombe Estereo handled it nicely.
9) 1800 Tequila “Hands”
Agency: Crispin Porter & Bogusky
Track: “Tap Dance” by Octave Minds (feat. Chance the Rapper & The Social Experiment)
The use of this track in the ad perfectly illustrates why something like Shazam exists. You get an intriguing tease of an unusual new sound and you just instantly have to know more.
10) H&M “The Summer Shop 2017”
Track: “Summer Wine” by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood
Last week’s #1 dropped a bit, but hung in there. And it’s not surprising, as both the song and the ad harken back to simpler summer days when all you needed was some sun, barely any clothing, a few friends, and sepia tone.
