Each week, Clio highlights the top Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad. This week’s Super Bowl edition names the musical winners from one of advertising’s biggest nights.
1) Monster Headphones, “Getting Started”
Agency: Content Innovation Agency
Track: “Savior” by Iggy Azalea Feat. Quavo
Iggy Azalea is back in a big way with new single “Savior,” which features Quavo of the hip-hop group Migos. The song is her first new music since the awkward rollout around her 2017 sophomore record Digital Distortion, which was pulled from her label’s release schedule and even now still isn’t available on major streaming platforms.
2) Budweiser, “Stand By You”
Agency: DAVID Miami
Track: “Stand By Me” by Skylar Grey
Budweiser takes on a different tone this Super Bowl with a melancholy cover of “Stand By Me” to accompany footage of their work providing disaster relief in the form of fresh water. The singer, Skylar Grey, is best known for frequently collaborating with Eminem, writing songs like “Love The Way You Lie” and “Walk On Water.” She’s also due for a new album in 2018, which she’s currently working on.
3) NBC Sports, “Winter Olympics”
Track: “This Is Me” by Keala Settle & The Greatest Showman Ensemble
Combine inspirational Olympics footage with the inspirational movie musical The Greatest Showman and you’ve got, well, magic. “This Is Me” is an uplifting hit from Broadway actress Keala Settle -- and it’s basically perfect for underdog athlete narratives. Get ready to hear this song a bunch over the next few weeks as the Olympics begin in PyeongChang, South Korea.
4) Diet Coke, “Groove”
Track: “Long Distance” by Sam Gellaitry
In this memorable ad, Coca-Cola tapped a kind of awkward woman to do some kind of awkward dancing as she drinks Diet Coke’s new Twisted Mango flavor. Diet Coke made her do it! But more likely, it was the brassy beats from Scottish producer Sam Gellaitry. The ad is also notable for its director, Bridesmaids creator Paul Feig.
5) Amazon Prime Video, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”
Track: “All Along The Watchtower” by Devlin Feat. Ed Sheeran
Amazon Prime Video’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial features a Bob Dylan cover of ‘All Along The Watchtower” performed by Ed Sheeran and Devlin. The song was also famously covered by Jimi Hendrix.
6) Doritos Blaze and Mountain Dew Ice, “Battle”
Agency: Goodby Silverstein & Partners
Tracks: “Look At Me Now” by Chris Brown Feat. Busta Rhymes & Lil Wayne & “Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliott
One of the more popular ads of the night was this epic lip-sync battle between Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), who rapped Busta Rhymes’ part in “Look At Me Now,” and Morgan Freeman, who did Missy Elliott justice with his take on “Get Ur Freak On.” PepsiCo may have pit two of its brands against each other, but we’re obviously supposed to enjoy them together -- just as we can declare no winner between Dinklage and Freeman.
7) NBC Sports, “Winter Olympics”
Track: “Girl On Fire” by Alicia Keys
Another Olympics spot, this ad features U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn sharing her incredible comeback story after she missed the 2014 Sochi Olympics because of injury. Girl on fire, indeed.
8) Toyota, “Good Odds”
Agency: Saatchi Los Angeles
Track: “Stronger Than I’ve Ever Been” by Kaleena Zanders
Toyota offers its take on inspirational Olympian narratives by sharing Canadian Paralympic skier Lauren Woolstencroft’s incredible story. Once again the soundtrack is key, with powerful lyrics from Kaleena Zanders like, “I've been chasing a road to glory, driven since I was a child. Sweat and tears fall to push me forward, pride and fear fuel the fire.”
9) Mass Mutual, “The Unsung”
Agency: Johannes Leonardo
Track: “I’ll Stand By You,” by The Pretenders (Cover)
Mass Mutual continues the trend of inspirational Super Bowl ads by highlighting anti-bullying efforts around the world as actors sing a cover of The Pretenders’ instant classic “I’ll Stand By You.”
10) Michelob Ultra, “I Like Beer”
Agency: FCB Chicago
Track: “I Like Beer” by Jon Pardi & Friends
Michelob Ultra reminds us that even fit, athletic people (like Chris Pratt!) enjoy beer, and that you don’t necessarily have to give it up to be healthy. In the ad, country singer Jon Pardi covers Tom T. Hall’s hit anthem, "I Like Beer."
11) Kraft, “Family Greatly”
Agency: Leo Burnett Chicago
Track: “Class Historian” by Broncho
Kraft took a different approach to its Super Bowl ad by crowdsourcing photos and videos from viewers spending time with their families in fun, funny, and authentic ways. Broncho’s 2014 single “Class Historian” set the nostalgic mood.
12) Dodge Ram, “Icelandic Vikings”
Agency: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners
Track: “We Will Rock You” by Queen
One of Dodge Ram’s Super Bowl commercials took a decidedly Game of Thrones-y vibe, with Icelandic vikings using a Ram to tow a massive viking ship to prepare for battle. Why people needed to Shazam “We Will Rock You,” one of the most well-known songs ever, we may never know.
13) Kia Stinger, "Feel Something Again”
Agency: David & Goliath
Track: “Dream On” by Aerosmith
Kia takes viewers back in time to Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler’s glory days as Tyler realizes he’s achieved his dreams over the past few decades. Fittingly, the Aerosmith hit “Dream On” shrieks warmly in the background.
14) NFL, “Touchdown Celebrations to Come”
Agency: Grey New York
Track: “The Time Of My Life (I’ve Had)” by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
One of the most written about ads of the night was this gem from the NFL. The spot features Eli Manning and Odell Beckham, Jr. recreating the iconic number from Dirty Dancing, “The Time Of My Life.”
15) NBC, “The Voice 2018”
Agency: In-house, Elements Music & Sound
Track: “The Voice Song” by Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Alicia Keys, and Kelly Clarkson
NBC’s The Voice-themed Super Bowl slot joyfully parodies its judges’ personas, as well as classic Super Bowl commercial tropes, with a creative original country song. So far the video has more than 1.2 million views, proving that the judges can turn some chairs of their own.
