Each week, Clio highlights the top ten Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad.
This week’s Shazam chart is full of commercials that stick with you and songs you can’t seem to get out of your head. Ranging from new to a few years old to vintage, Shazamers love it all - and they aren’t shy about voicing their (surprisingly positive) opinions in the comments.
1) Vitaminwater “Drink Outside the Lines”
Track: “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man
“Feel It Still” continues to make waves among Shazamers, making its way back to the top spot this week. People came for Aaron Paul, but they stayed for Portugal. The Man. YouTube comments are flooded with “Song?”, “What song is that?”, and “Does anyone know the song??” – Shazam is here to help.
The section also included praise for the commercial with comments like “When I see this commercial I wanna dance my heart out,” “This is my favorite commercial right now!”, “Thanks to this commercial I found a new favorite song”, “Love this commercial!!” and “I dance every time I see this.” With such positive comments in a typically negative space, Vitaminwater should be thrilled.
2) Samsung “Do Bigger Things”
Track: “Howlin’ For You” by The Black Keys
Samsung shows off the new features of its Galaxy Note8 to the beat of The Black Keys’ “Howlin’ For You,” and it’s just enough to get people to Shazam for the full track. Consumers are even leaving comments on the commercial like “I’m only here for the song” and “Finally a commercial that's not a Black Keys rip off but an actual Black Keys song.”
3) Volkswagen “The New King”
Track: “Livin’ Thing” by Electric Light Orchestra
In its new commercial, Volkswagen is breathing new life into the 1970s classic “Livin’ Thing” by Electric Light Orchestra. The smooth jam, which hasn’t topped charts since the late ‘70s, complements this fun spot with ease as the all-new Volkswagen is being chased by a huge King Kong balloon.
4) Walmart “Many Chairs. One Table.”
Track: “Get Together” by The Youngbloods
Reminiscent of Coca-Cola’s famous “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” commercial from the ‘70s, Walmart’s “Many Chairs. One Table.” showcases people from all walks of life coming together - and The Youngbloods’ “Get Together” is proving to be the perfect track among Shazam users.
5) Pepsi “Refreshing”
Track: “Stay” by Zedd & Alessia Cara
Not budging from the charts in months, Zedd & Alessia Cara’s “Stay” is still winning for Pepsi and Shazam.
6) State Farm “Starting Today”
Track: “Safe and Sound” by Lily Elise
State Farm is embracing slower tracks to accompany its commercials, and Lily Elise’s cover of “Safe and Sound” is no exception. In fact, fans of the song are demanding State Farm to release a full version of the track with comments like “WE NEED THIS SONG STATEFARM,” “State Farm please release this cover!! Upload it and I’ll switch from Geico I swear” and “State Farm make a full version of this song, sell it and they will come. So many love it including me. Pretty please I need this song in my life.”
7) Jeep “Summer Anthem”
Agency: DDB Chicago
Track: “On The Way” by Marc Scibilia
Marc Scibilia’s “On The Way” may not be topping every chart yet, but it remains strong on the Shazam chart for another week.
8) Oreo “Hypnotize”
Agency: The Martin Agency
Track: “Hypnotize” by The Notorious B.I.G.
Consumers only get a 15-second taste of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize,” a classic throwback song, so it’s no surprise that people are Shazaming for the full track.
9) PetSmart “Runway”
Agency: In House
Track: “Me Too” by Meghan Trainor
Meghan Trainor’s “Me Too” 100% makes PetSmart’s “Runway” commercial great. Freshly groomed pups walking the catwalk to a repeat of “If I were you, I’d wanna be me too” is instantly hilarious and adorable, and Shazamers are loving the track.
10) Amazon Prime “Lion”
Agency: In House
Track: “You and Me” by Arielle Paul
Arielle Paul’s sweet “You and Me” is roaring new life into this year-old commercial for Amazon Prime.
