Each week, Clio highlights the top ten Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad. This week, Applebee’s gets TWO all-you-can-eat riblet advertisements on the list, including one that features a famous Celine Dion hit.
1) Apple, “It’s Here”
Track: “Best Friend” by Sofi Tukker Feat. NERVO & The Knocks & Alisa Ueno
Apple, king of commercials that shine line on up and coming artists, has made New York EDM and pop-influenced duo Sofi Tukker very popular this week. Apple’s giving this song a lot of play as of late, since the company also used the track at their huge iPhone X launch event back in September.
2) Google, “Go Round”
Track: “Grant Green” by Mr. Jukes feat. Charles Bradley
After a short stint off the top ten list, “Grant Green” slides back into number two with this Pixel 2 ad. Have you memorized the lyrics yet? Hint: “I NEED YOU....”
3) Volkswagen, “People First”
Agency: DDB, Palm + Havas, Deutsch Inc, PHD
Track: “With A Little Help From My Friends” by Joe Coker
This oldie but goodie from October uses the Joe Cocker cover of the classic Beatles hit “With A Little Help To My Friends” as the soundtrack to a heartwarming ‘70s era music festival story that looks like it could be Coachella. The real question here is: why do people need to Shazam this song?
4) Mountain Dew, “Dewey Rider”
Agency: BBDO, Chelsea
Track: “All The Way Up” by Fat Joe, Remy Ma Feat. French Montana & Infared
This ad inspires us that we too can go all the way up from simple Mountain Dew drinker to professional NASCAR racer. Do the Dew.
5) Peloton, “Give It All”
Agency: Partners & Spade
Track: “The Greatest” by Sia
Big news for Sia (besides the popularity of this ad) -- the singer and songwriter is lending her talents to the new Fifty Shades Freed movie, out Feb. 9., for a song called “Deer in Headlights.” Hey, say what you want about the franchise, but the music tends to be pretty darn good.
6) Quickbooks, “Backing You Anthem”
Track: “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” by Willa Amai
Tax season is upon us, but at least we get the gift of this sort of inspirational, folksy Daft Punk cover courtesy of Los Angeles singer Willa Amai (who is coincidentally a Linda Perry acolyte).
7) Apple, “Introducing Face ID”
Track: “Turning Heads” by NVDES
Apple is maintaining it’s offerings with this Shazam mainstay that introduces the world to Face ID.
8) Applebee’s, “Romance”
Agency: Grey Global Group, Inc.
Track: “It’s All Coming Back To Me” by Celine Dion
I was hoping I’d get to write about this ad this week, since it combines a few of my favorite things: lip-syncing, Celine Dion, and gimmicky Applebee’s promotions. This time it’s for all-you-can-eat riblets (wash it down with their $1 Long Island Iced Teas). Celine deserves better than this, but at least we’re reminded of how utterly amazing “It’s All Coming Back To Me” is.
9) Volvo, “Embrace The Future”
Agency: MPG, Periscope, AKQA, Jennings & Company
Track: “Harlem River” by Kevin Morby
Texas singer/songwriter Kevin Morby’s 2013 track is resurfacing into the public consciousness with this Volvo ad. It’s the kind of slow, ambient song whose YouTube page is going to be filled with comments like, “a car commercial brought me here,” for all of time.
10) Applebee’s, “All You Can Eat Riblets and Tenders”
Agency: Grey Global Group, Inc.
Track: “Keep It Comin’ Love” by KC & The Sunshine Band
Applebee’s strikes again with another all-you-can-eat riblet and chicken tender promo, this time set to a cheery KC & The Sunshine Band hit to make you forget what you’re putting in your body.
