Apple Continues To Own The Holiday Season

The most Shazam’d songs of the week: Nov. 27 - Dec. 3

Each week, Clio highlights the top ten Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad.

This week’s list is dominated by tech companies. Apple is chief among them with four entries -- five if you count the heavy name drops in Samsung’s ad, and six if you count how close Apple is to Applebee’s. Apple does have a way with stuck-in-your-head commercial melodies.

1) Apple, “Holiday: Sway”

Agency: TBWA Chiat Day

Track: “Palace” by Sam Smith

Sam Smith’s gooey Lifetime movie-ready song is on top again this week as it continues to capitalize on holiday time sentimentality (and hype around the iPhone X).

2) Apple, “Animoji Yourself”

Agency: TBWA Chiat Day

Track: “All Night” by Big Boi

This adorable new Apple spot showcases the potential of the X’s Animoji feature, which can turn you into a barn animal who is lip syncing to Big Boi.

3) Google, “Go Round”

Agency: In House

Track: “Grant Green” by Mr. Jukes feat. Charles Bradley

Why is this Google Pixel 2 song so addictive? Why are soul & funk inspiring so many songs on this list? We may never know, but we’ll take it.

4) Apple, “What’s A Computer”

Agency: TBWA\Media Arts Lab

Track: “Go” by Louis The Child

Oh look, another Apple ad.

5) Samsung, “Growing Up” (last week number 8)

Agency: 72andSunny, MWWPR, R/GA

Track: “I’m Moving On” by Chyvonne Scott

Samsung’s Galaxy phone commercial hangs on another week, up three spots from number 8.

6) Applebee’s, “Dreams Come True”

Agency: Grey Global Group Inc.

Track: “You Make My Dreams” by Daryl Hall & John Oates

With its $1 Long Island Iced Tea promotion for December, Applebee’s is becoming a more viable dinner spot than ever before. If your local neighborhood Applebee’s is more crowded than usual, attribute it also to Hall & Oates, for lending the effortlessly fun “You Make My Dreams” to slow sizzling steak montages.

7) Google, “The New Way” (last week number 2)

Agency: In House

Track: “Work It Out” by Karizma

I’m beginning to develop a Pavlovian response to this commercial -- my heart rate picks up, my energy increases. Thanks, Google.

8) Pandora, “DO Wonderful Gifts”

Agency: Bacon Production

Track: “Dont Give Up On Love” by Daniel Farrant And James Knight

This Pandora commercial has everything: a cute puppy, holiday romance, snow, and a woman training her dog to flip out when he gets to the Pandora jewelry store (instead of, I don’t know, telling your significant other what you want for Christmas).

9) Apple, “Introducing Face ID”

Agency: TBWA Chiat Day

Track: “Turning Heads” by NVDES

And for Apple’s final offering on this list, a boppy face mashup ad featuring Young Cool People unlocking their phones with their Young Cool Faces.

10) Mountain Dew, “Dewey Rider”

Agency: BBDO, Chelsea

Track: “All The Way Up” by Fat Joe & Remy Ma Feat. French Montana & Infared

This race car-themed Mountain Dew ad is back on the list this week after falling off last week. Guess you could say it’s a real come-from-behind victory.
