Each week, Clio highlights the top ten Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad.
1) Apple, “Holiday:Sway”
Agency: TBWA Chiat Day
Track: “Palace” by Sam Smith
People love sentimental Sam Smith!! We can expect to see this commercial continue to nab the top spot all through the holiday season. Hope you’re not tired of Smith’s melancholic balladry yet.
2) Google, “Go Round”
Agency: In House
Track: “Grant Green” by Mr. Jukes feat. Charles Bradley
Mr. Jukes is surely on his way to a hit with this Grant Green-sampling retro number that’s been a reliable contender on the most Shazam’d list.
3) Dior, “For Love”
Agency: Iconoclast
Track: “Chandelier” by Sia
This oldie but goodie ad from the fall has everything: Natalie Portman demanding proof of a suitor’s love, Natalie Portman jumping off a very tall dock into the sea, Natalie Portman fighting and making up in Paris, and best of all, Natalie Portman sort of lip-syncing to Sia’s instant karaoke classic, “Chandelier.”
4) Apple, “Animoji Yourself”
Agency: TBWA Chiat Day
Track: “All Night” by Big Boi
Apple’s Animoji feature is still just as fun as it was last week, and it’s making us reallllly want an iPhone X. The lip-syncing poop emoji is calling our name.
5) Old Navy, “Do the HoliYAY Dance”
Agency: Chandelier
Track: “D.A.N.C.E.” by Justice
Old Navy proves again how synonymous their sales commercials are with Christmas time as they feature this infectious hit from Justice. The way these people move is a mystery.
6) Apple, “What’s A Computer”
Agency: TBWA\Media Arts Lab
Track: “Go” by Louis The Child
This Apple iPad Pro advertisement may very well be with us forever.
7) Walmart, “Standing Ovation”
Agency: Haworth Marketing + Media
Track: “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” by The Gap Band
The Gap Band’s 1982 song makes me feel almost as happy as the people in the commercial do when they open Samsung televisions and giant toy tigers.
8) Apple, “Introducing Face ID”
Agency: TBWA Chiat Day
Track: “Turning Heads” by NVDES
To celebrate Apple’s recent $390 million investment into Finisar, the company that made the iPhone X’s FaceID, take a listen to this upbeat jam, perfect for soundtracking your multiple attempts to get FaceID to work.
9) Samsung, “Growing Up”
Agency: 72andSunny, MWWPR, R/GA
Track: “I’m Moving On” by Chyvonne Scott
Will this young man, sick of Apple products and possible capitalism, ever grow up and get a Samsung Galaxy? We hope not, because this song never gets old.
10) Oreo, “Oreo Dippers”
Agency: The Martin Agency, Richmond
Track: “You and Me” by Penny & The Quarters
Something about this bluesy Penny & The Quarters is evergreen, as it crops up again this week after a couple weeks off the list. Hit play as you settle in with the three, uh, delicious new Oreo flavors announced this week: Cherry Cola Oreos, Kettle Corn Oreos, and Pina Colada Oreo Thins. Yum.
