Each week, Clio highlights the top ten Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad.
This week, Apple is back on top, but this time with a new, holiday-centric ad that works almost as a music video for Sam Smith’s new track.
1) Apple, “Holiday: Sway”
Agency: TBWA Chiat Day
Track: “Palace” by Sam Smith
Sam Smith’s music is practically made to soundtrack sentimental holiday commercials. This one, for the iPhone X, creates a love story out of two strangers sharing Apple’s AirPods (and a romantic dance). It’s almost enough to thaw our cold, cold hearts.
2) Google, “Go Round: 50 Percent Off”
Agency: In House
Track: “Grant Green” by Mr. Jukes feat. Charles Bradley
Though the actual ad for the Google Pixel 2 is pretty standard (revolving product shots, positive media reviews), what really makes this spot is the song, a brass-heavy soul smash from former Bombay Bicycle Club frontman Jack Steadman, with vocals from the late, legendary Charles Bradley.
3) Jeep, “Release Your Renegade”
Agency: DDB Chicago
Track: “Bad At Love” by Halsey
We will never escape Halsey and her dark, catchy drama pop -- this week, her Jeep collab is up three spots from last week.
4) Applebee’s, “Dreams Come True”
Agency: Grey Global Group Inc.
Track: “You Make My Dreams” by Daryl Hall & John Oates
Everything old can be new again, and that’s especially true with the following things: chain restaurants, Daryl Hall, and John Oates, all three of which are up a few spots from last week.
5) Apple, “What’s A Computer”
Agency: TBWA\Media Arts Lab
Track: “Go” by Louis The Child
Apple is stacking this week’s list as its future-forward Louis the Child ad hangs on for another week at number five. But we’re still a little skeptical that any preteen kid would ever ask, “what’s a computer?” as they play on their iPad.
6) Beats, “Above the Noise”
Agency: JohnXHannes New York
Track: “Lemon” by N.E.R.D. and Rihanna
Beats knows we can’t not dance when N.E.R.D.’s “Lemon” comes on, but very few of us can dance as well as Mette Towley does in this commercial (fun fact: Towley is also the dancer in the official “Lemon” music video).
7) Google, “The New Way” (last week number 2)
Agency: In House
Track: “Work It Out” by Karizma
If you’re still in a Thanksgiving coma, use this ubiquitous commercial as an excuse to get in 30 seconds of jumping jacks and call it a day.
8) Samsung, “Growing Up” (last week number 8)
Agency: 72andSunny, MWWPR, R/GA
Track: “I’m Moving On” by Chyvonne Scott
Samsung’s slightly condescending Apple ad stays at number 8 this week, though even on this list it’s outnumbered by its largest competitor.
9) Oreo, “Oreo Dippers”
Agency: The Martin Agency, Richmond
Track: “You and Me” by Penny & The Quarters
This sweet father/daughter bonding commercial from October has resurfaced as Oreo reminds us to get out of the city and go look at, you know, actual stars and nature and stuff.
10) Walmart, “Standing Ovation”
Agency: Haworth Marketing + Media
Track: “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” by The Gap Band
The Gap Band’s 1982 hit gets a new context in this Walmart commercial, where the “bomb” is actually a giant Samsung television, a stuffed tiger toy, a drone, and a Cuisinart mixer. Bombs away.
