Each week, Clio highlights the top ten Shazam’d songs from commercials, showcasing the power of pairing the right tune with the right ad. This week, Walmart ascends to number one with a song that will possibly remind you of listening to Now That’s What I Call Music! 14 on repeat in your bedroom.
1) Walmart, “Style You Won’t Believe”
Agency: Haworth Marketing and Media
Track: “Sugar” by Robin Schulz Feat. Francesco Yates
Walmart’s spring apparel commercial conjures up instant nostalgia. Why? Because the song in the ad, made by German DJ Robin Schulz, features a hefty sample of Baby Bash’s ubiquitous 2003 hit “Suga Suga,” including that iconic guitar line. Cue the memories.
2) Apple, “Fly Market”
Track: “Back Pocket” by Vulfpeck
Apple’s newest iPhone ad highlights the magic of Apple Pay with the cool factor of Vulfpeck’s entirely too funky hit “Back Pocket.”
3) Samsung, “The Camera Re-imagined”
Agency: 72andSunny, MWWPR, R/GA
Track: “Get Stupid” by Aston Merrygold
This spot for the Samsung Galaxy S9 also features a funk-inspired bop, this time courtesy of one-time X Factor contestant Aston Merrygold.
4) Alfa Romeo, “Wicked Game”
Track: “Wicked Game” by Ursine Vulpine Feat. Annaca
Is luxury carmaker Alfa Romeo’s December 2017 ad a car commercial or a 50 Shades of Grey spinoff trailer? Hard to tell, especially with that oozy, atmospheric pop smash from British composer Ursine Vulpine. Cars 4, anyone?
5) Indeed, “Job Search”
Agency: DCX Growth Accelerator
Track: “Sunny” by Bobby Hebb
Indeed manages to capture the absolute Groundhog Day-esque monotony of the job search, but with this classic song from Bobby Hebb, it’s hard not to smile through the pain.
6) H&M, “2018 Spring Collection”
Track: “Know How” by Young MC
H&M’s spring collection spot cancels men and starts a massive all-female dance party, including actresses Elizabeth Olsen and Winona Ryder. And of course when the audience watches these two ladies prepare to dance together, the soundtrack is Young MC (the person responsible for one of the biggest hits of the late ‘80s/early ‘90s: “Bust A Move”).
7) Vitaminwater, “Drink Outside The Lines”
Track: “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man
Portugal. The Man’s endlessly catchy hit “Feel It Still” clings with Vitaminwater to the list another week after dropping from its previous no. 1.
8) MINI, “More Moments To Discover”
Agency: Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners
Track: “No Roots” by Alice Merton
This adventure-laden Mini Cooper advertisement is accompanied by Alice Merton’s “No Roots.” The German-Irish-Canadian singer-songwriter’s voice instantly recalls a younger Florence Welch. According to Billboard, Merton is also the first solo woman since Lorde in 2014 to top the Rock Airplay chart.
9) L’Oreal, “Comeback”
Track: “Never Be The Same” by Camila Cabello
Camila Cabello’s excellent “Never Be The Same” gets another week on the chart as listeners flock to their Shazam app during the L’Oreal commercial.
10) Warner Bros. Records, “All On Me”
Track: “All On Me” by Devin Dawson
Up-and-coming country singer and songwriter Devin Dawson is no. 10 on the list with his music video-turned-Warner Bros. commercial for the song “All On Me.”
