LOS ANGELES, USA // Michelle Dougherty is an Emmy-winning director, creative director, and designer. With more than 20 years of experience, her career spans live action and documentary film, main title sequences, branding, and advertising — all driven by a passion for telling great, emotionally resonant stories.
Highlights of her work include creating the Emmy-nominated main title sequences for Boardwalk Empire, Band of Brothers, Jessica Jones, Magic City, and the Emmy-winning sequence for Stranger Things. She also created foundational elements for brands, including the iconic Netflix animation that opens each series and film.
Michelle co-directed and produced an original documentary, Sonic Sea, which is a call to action about ocean noise and the devastating industrialization that is endangering marine life. The film won an Emmy Win for News & Documentary for Outstanding Nature Documentary and for Outstanding Music & Sound. The film was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Graphic Design & Art Direction and was an official selection in 25 film festivals throughout the world.
Other accolades include Art Director’s Club Awards, Clios, COMARTS, and additional Emmy nominations across other projects. Michelle’s work has been shown at the Smithsonian Design Museum, the Hammer Museum, the Walker Art Center, and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. She has been recognized by the AIGA, and her work has been featured in Time Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Variety, New York Magazine / Vulture, Vox, Vice España, Fast Company, Wired, and Adweek.
Michelle appreciates the diversity of projects she’s had the honor of working on. She loves learning through the process, connecting with new inspiring collaborators, and, most of all, hopefully, making an impact along the way.
Currently she is a Studio Creative Director at Apple.
