2012 Honorary Award Recipient: Marlo Thomas

Marlo Thomas is an award-winning actress, author and activist, whose body of work continues to have an impact on American entertainment and culture.

She has been honored with four Emmy Awards, the Peabody, a Golden Globe and a Grammy, and has been inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

She conceived, produced and starred in television’s That Girl, which broke new ground for independent women. Her pioneering spirit continued with her creation of Free to Be...You and Me, which became a platinum album, bestselling book, and an Emmy Award-winning television special. Throughout it all, she has remained a constant presence on television, and on and off-Broadway, most recently on Broadway in Relatively Speaking, three one-acts written by Ethan Coen, Elaine May and Woody Allen, and this past summer in the film “LOL”, co-starring Demi Moore and Miley Cyrus.

Marlo’s six books, all New York Times bestsellers, include Free to Be You and Me, Free to Be a Family, The Right Words at the Right Time (Volumes 1 and 2), Thanks and Giving: All Year Long (which also became a Grammy-winning CD), and her memoir, Growing Up Laughing. In 2010, she launched her website, MarloThomas.com, through AOL and The Huffington Post, and now serves as Editor-at-Large of Huffington Post’s Women’s Page.

Marlo is the National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is the driving force behind countless public awareness efforts to educate the public about the life-saving work being done at St. Jude that impacts the lives of children in communities across America and around the world.

Her direct-mail campaigns and television specials have reached millions of people. Her ingenuity led her to create the annual St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign in 2004, a national program across all media that encourages holiday shoppers to “Give thanks for the healthy children in your life and give to those who are not.”

Ms. Thomas lives in New York with her husband, Phil Donahue.
