Young girls drop out of sports at twice the rate of boys. There are several reasons for this. At the heart of it is a lack of visible role models - sportswomen who continue to push through the same challenges and doubts girls face every day. Sports Illustrated’s aim was to encourage young girls to keep playing sports. With the Wall of Will, it was able to reach girls where they often think of quitting sports – their school gyms and locker rooms. Sports Illustrated did so by transforming its articles about sportswomen overcoming obstacles into bold, larger-than-life wallpapers. However, merely reaching girls did not solve the problem. That’s where design played a crucial role – establishing a meaningful connection with the girls, understanding their problems and giving them the encouragement to overcome those problems. It was inspired by the raw, expressive collages often found in their notebooks. It borrowed elements from teen culture and replicated their playful mindset.
