Disney’s “Out of My Mind” is a coming-of-age film following Melody Brooks, a quick-witted sixth grader with cerebral palsy and a sharp mind. Unfortunately, as she is non-verbal and uses a wheelchair, others often view her with pity and discomfort. Though her parents are fierce advocates for her, Melody yearns to be seen and heard by the world around her. A young educator notices Melody’s untapped potential and encourages her to participate in mainstream education. Against all odds and in the face of numerous challenges, Melody leads her school’s quiz team to success and uses her newfound voice to inspire others.
To promote the film and to best highlight the inclusivity focus of "Out of My Mind," Disney Branded Television released a featurette that included interviews with cast and crew discussing the message and ideals that the team wanted to express. The team consulted with disabled individuals and worked with an all-access team to ensure that the unique needs of all actors and crew, no matter their ability, were met. The filmmakers expressed the goal of setting an example for industry leaders, studios, and the world at large to hopefully follow.
The featurette honed in on the human element of creative spaces and the powerful messaging behind the film, while treating viewers to an emotional, powerful look into its story.
