The iconic spoof comedy genre roared back to theaters with a beloved franchise – The Naked Gun – thanks in part to a collab with ESPN. The best way to reignite nostalgic fans while also reaching a whole new audience was to have them meet Detective Frank Drebin (Liam Neeson). So, we tapped into the film’s unique brand of laughter and recruited an all-star lineup of athletes to join Frank in a knockout promo.
Inspired by the look and feel of classic ESPN office commercials, we reached our core target audience by twisting this familiar setup into a ridiculous spoof. In a spot that feels like a scene from the film, Frank is investigating a mysterious wave of sports “crimes” – stolen bases, theft of possession, fighting in hockey. In the process he interrogates Dodger’s Mookie Betts, Dallas Wings’ Paige Bueckers, NY Rangers’ Adam Fox, and hilariously loses his cool in front of Eli Manning.
We reached fans, new and old, by seeding out creative in key high-impact programming on ESPN, athlete’s handles as well as various film and studio social platforms. Our custom vignette reached 6+ million fans online, racked up 5.9+ million organic social views, and scored multiple press pickups and major buzz. Frank Drebin Jr. may not have cracked the case, but with a stellar box office opening and glowing reviews, the result was a grand slam.
