Brazil is home to one of the most dangerous illegal wildlife trafficking markets, countless birds, reptiles, fish and primates are pulled from their ecosystems and sold on the open market. Whilst the extent of the issue is fully understood, we’ve also become aware of the increasing number of social media posts featuring domesticated wild animals that Brazilians love to share online. Sensing a connection, we dug deeper and discovered that this sharing is indeed part of the problem, because it fuels an algorithm that actually spurs increased wildlife purchases.
To help alleviate the problem, we re-educated people and the social algorithms. We proved that not only is data vital to understanding the problem, but it can be key to solving the issue. We saw a 12% decrease in social media video engagement featuring wild animals on Instagram and reduced global purchase intent for Monkeys, Parrots and snakes.
