In 2023, over 170,000 Americans traveled across the US, not for business or leisure, but out of necessity; seeking essential healthcare no longer available in their home states due to abortion bans. According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, this figure represents only a fraction of those impacted; thousands more were unable to make the journey or afford the costs of travel, lodging, and lost wages for what should have been a straightforward appointment. The team saw an opportunity to reframe the Reproductive Rights debate to illuminate the cost and danger in forcing women to travel across state lines for abortion care. But how do you get people to listen to an issue when so many are tuning out of the polarized debate? Enter artist and advocate Vanessa Carlton's most famous song, “A Thousand Miles.” This classic and nostalgic pop song became the perfect soundtrack to tell that story. The film features one woman’s long journey out of Texas to seek abortion care. It's just one of many real life stories being lived everyday. The film then leaned in even further by featuring Vanessa telling her own experience surviving an ectopic pregnancy thanks to abortion care. The film was shared online via Facebook, Instagram and Vevo. With a push to be shared with influencers and celebrities and their shared platforms. In addition, we also created a microsite Reproductiverights.org/athousandmiles, featuring more content with Vanessa Carlton, information regarding state bans, stories from real women currently in abortion litigations, and call to action forms to reach out to local representatives. Giving Americans nationwide the chance to tell Congress to protect reproductive freedoms, so they will never have to travel thousands of miles for essential care again.
