In football, everything has a value: players, clubs, even national teams. Everything, except the fans. While stadium violence and discrimination continue to affect the sport, ESPN and Transfermarkt created Fan Stats, the first real-time metric that quantifies the economic value of fan behavior.
By tracking ESPN’s news coverage and analyzing sentiment, the system increases or decreases a team’s fan value based on their conduct. This turns respect into a measurable asset and reveals how much a team gains or loses through the actions of its supporters.
