As the official cryptocurrency partner of the NBA, Coinbase brought high-tech hoops to life in the cradle of all technology—San Francisco—during NBA’s All-Star Weekend.
The idea was twofold: how can a company that represents the future of money create a futuristic basketball experience, and how can we use our own technology to make it more seamless than any other?
When fans arrived at Coinbase Arena, the immersive fan experience included the opportunity to create a Player ID—a personalized onchain basketball card—on our custom-built microsite plugged into Coinbase’s own blockchain. As players scored their first basket, Coinbase’s 17,000-pound robotic hoop came to life, challenging fans to make as many shots as possible, at different heights, in 24 seconds.
Every player’s score was beamed in real time to a massive curved Arena LED, a jumbotron mounted to the ceiling, microsite leaderboard, as well as our integrated merch booth for fans to claim their specific tier of custom merch. The microsite also hosted automated highlight reels of each fan’s performance instantly downloadable for social.
With guest appearances from NBA players, the immersive experience showed fans that they don’t have to be a pro to play against a robotic rim or NBA talent—just like they don’t need to be an expert to open a digital wallet and get on the blockchain.
