The 2024 US election was a fierce political debate with reproductive rights at its core. We decided an anthem was needed to unite women across the country — a powerful and poignant piece of music that spoke perfectly to the times. We found that music in Martha Wainwright’s iconic song Bloody Mother Fucking Assholes, a piece originally written about her abusive father with lyrics that mirror the fight for reproductive rights. The music was to be set against archival images that beautifully portrayed the story of the movement. With no budget allocated for music licensing, securing the rights to such an iconic song presented a challenge. However, leveraging our longstanding relationship with Martha’s music publisher, we made a direct appeal for a gratis license. Moved by the cause and the project’s urgency, Martha and her team quickly agreed, granting permission for the track’s use in full support of the campaign. This seamless fusion of music and historical imagery transformed the piece into more than just a call to action—it became a rallying cry for women across the country to reclaim their rights at the ballot box.
