Glowing Relief
Puerto Rico suffers more than 11 million blackouts each year. At the same time, it has one of the oldest populations in the world. Seniors who live alone depend on multiple prescriptions every day. And because of U.S. regulations, all pills are dispensed in the same amber bottles. In the dark, they all look identical. During a blackout, that isn’t just inconvenient, it’s dangerous.
That’s where Alivia Health, Puerto Rico’s largest local healthcare organization, and its community pharmacy network Farmacias Plaza stepped in. Instead of waiting for the system to change, we led the change, turning a simple label into a life-saving tool.
We created the world’s first glow-in-the-dark prescription label. Coated with a safe, non-toxic luminescent varnish, it charges endlessly under daylight or any artificial light. And it glows for up to six hours, longer than the average blackout. No batteries. No electronics.
The solution was fully compliant with U.S. pharmaceutical regulations. By applying the glow only to the section of the sheet that becomes the bottle’s label, it carried every legally required detail while remaining simple and scalable. Pharmacies could print it with their existing machines, at no extra cost. And for patients, it was always free.
Glowing Relief redefined what a pharmacy can be. More than packaging, it became care. A small label carrying a big truth: when the lights go out, safety stays on.
