In 1980, Terry Fox set out on an extraordinary run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Though forced to stop when his cancer returned, his Marathon of Hope became one of the most powerful acts of courage in the country’s history — and a promise to finish what he started. Forty-five years later, Finish It was created to transform Terry’s legacy from remembrance into action, reminding Canadians — and the world — that his dream of a world without cancer is no longer distant or symbolic, but within reach. At the heart of the campaign is a cinematic film that bridges past and present. Through a careful blend of restored archival imagery, modern filmmaking, and performance by a real amputee athlete, the film respectfully reconnects audiences with Terry’s quiet determination and enduring spirit. The emotional core of the film is its music: a re-imagined version of Courage by The Tragically Hip, featuring the unmistakable voice of Gord Downie. Like Terry Fox, Downie brought national attention to the fight against cancer through his openness about his own terminal diagnosis. In this adaptation, the band’s iconic rock anthem is stripped back to its essence — just voice and piano — transforming it from a communal anthem into an intimate reflection on perseverance, vulnerability, and resolve. The Tragically Hip, known for fiercely protecting their catalogue, not only granted permission for the adaptation — they donated the song in support of cancer research and shared the re-imagined version with their own audience. The response was immediate. Public demand led to the release of the full recording on a limited-edition 45-rpm vinyl, with all proceeds supporting cancer research. Finish It is more than a campaign or a film. It is a reminder that courage doesn’t end with a single act — it carries forward through collective action. By uniting two Canadian icons through music, memory, and purpose, the work invites everyone to help complete a marathon that began more than four decades ago.
