Re-commerce Atacama turned fashion waste into a global PR and commerce statement. Each year, thousands of tons of unsold clothing are dumped in Chile’s Atacama Desert.
To expose this Hidden crisis, VTEX partnered with Desierto Vestido and Fashion Revolution to create the world’s first e-commerce platform selling clothes rescued from the desert for zero dollars. Consumers paid Only the shipping fee, which funded rescue, sanitizing and delivery. What appeared to be a fashion sale was actually a PR stunt that transformed shopping into activism.
With no paid media, the project spread organically through influencers and global press. In just seven days, over 5,000 items sold out, generating millions of visits, coverage in more than 30 countries and hundreds of millions of earned impressions. More than awareness, Re-commerce Atacama helped increase pressure around textile waste, contributing to new regulations announced by the Chilean government.
