IKEA Family is one of Sweden’s largest loyalty programs, with over four million members. But growth had started to stagnate, and the program needed to evolve. IKEA introduced loyalty points, letting members earn points on purchases. A milestone for IKEA – but not for the world. Competitors had offered points for decades, and IKEA was undeniably late to the party.
So instead of pretending to be innovative, the launch owned the truth. Better Late Than Never turned IKEA’s lateness into the campaign idea itself. IKEA co-workers revived iconic viral trends far too late – Harlem Shake, Bottle Flip, Mannequin Challenge, Planking – recreated exactly as we remember them: lo-fi, nostalgic, and slightly cringe.
By owning our lateness instead of hiding it, a standard feature launch became something people actually talked about – driving +79% sign-ups, +183% traffic, and €17M in earned media.
