Too True Crime turns the true crime genre on its head to confront Canada’s ongoing femicide crisis. In a media landscape where violent stories, primarily those of women, are often commodified as entertainment, this project turned true crime fans into advocates for change.
Launched on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Too True Crime released over 580 short podcast episodes simultaneously on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, one for every woman killed by gender-based violence in Canada since 2020. Each episode presented only the facts of a woman’s life and death, intentionally avoiding sensationalism to restore dignity and humanity to stories too often reduced to spectacle.
Voiced by volunteers including women’s rights advocates, survivors, family members of victims, and a Member of Parliament, the series created a collective and living archive of lives lost. The podcast is updated in real time. Whenever a new femicide occurred, a new episode was released—with over 610 episodes—confronting subscribers with the ongoing reality of the crisis.
Each episode directs listeners to take action by signing a petition calling on the federal government to formally recognize femicide in the Criminal Code of Canada. By meeting true crime audiences where they already are, Too True Crime transforms consumption into accountability and storytelling into systemic change.
