Breastmilk Money turns breastfeeding into measurable financial value. Built inside the Herconomy app, the initiative allows Nigerian mothers to calculate how much money they save by breastfeeding instead of purchasing formula, then transfer that amount directly into a dedicated savings account.
Using WHO intake averages and live local formula prices, the milk to money calculator shows each mother a personalized monthly savings figure. With one tap, she can deposit the exact amount into Breastmilk Money and earn 14.3 percent interest, inspired by documented developmental benefits linked to exclusive breastfeeding.
In a market where formula is heavily marketed as modern and aspirational, and breastfeeding is often invisible or stigmatized, Breastmilk Money reframes care work as wealth. It gives mothers financial agency, social proof, and a practical tool to sustain healthy behavior in a challenging economic climate.
Launched during Women’s Month, the work was supported by a short film, social education with medical professionals, live demonstrations, events, and out of home placements. Beyond awareness, Breastmilk Money embedded health advocacy into a real financial product, creating direct action, sustained engagement, and meaningful behavior change.
