How do you make people care about bananas during the Super Bowl?
By turning them into a headline act.
To launch a new in-app feature called “Preference Picker” (a simple slider that lets customers choose exactly how ripe they want their bananas) the brand created an epic, retro-futuristic musical showdown directed by Spike Jonze and starring Ben Stiller and Benson Boone as a fictional Euro-pop duo.
The insight was simple: shoppers care deeply about control. Bananas are the platform’s most purchased item, and the one with the most detailed customer notes. People don’t just want bananas. They want their bananas.
So instead of treating the feature like a product demo, the campaign dramatized that obsession. On a glittering 60-foot stage, the duo sings passionately about choosing the perfect ripeness. What begins as a polished performance escalates into a comedic rivalry filled with soaring vocals, choreography, improvisation, a live backflip, and a spectacular crash into a drum kit, all in pursuit of grocery precision.
Shot entirely practically on vintage 1980s broadcast cameras in a 4:3 ratio, the film embraces grain, texture, and analog imperfection to create a world that feels both nostalgic and futuristic. The aesthetic, combined with Spike Jonze’s storytelling approach, makes the piece feel more like a discovered music video than a traditional commercial.
The casting bridges audiences: one icon beloved by longtime film fans and one contemporary music star with a massive younger following. Together, they brought two generations to the same stage.
By transforming a small UX detail into a cultural moment, the campaign reframed online grocery from risky to empowering.
Because when it comes to bananas (and everything else) - control matters.
