In a country where cricket owns the streets, basketball felt aspirational, foreign, and distant. But what if it wasn’t? What if the NBA’s most iconic dunks weren’t thousands of miles away - but already alive in the instinctive movements of a billion Indians? With no stars, no studios, and a sub-$15,000 budget, we captured moments of everyday flight across India - fishermen leaping into rivers, kids vaulting rooftops, workers in mid-air. Movements that mirrored the NBA’s greatest dunks. We commissioned one of India’s most famous photographers to roam the length and breadth of the country, across its most diverse landscapes. The resulting breathtaking, black and white images captured a multitude of portraits that depicted quintessential moments from everyday life in India. Amongst this veritable plethora of visuals, we chose the pictures that best captured iconic NBA dunks set against authentic Indian backdrops. We didn’t just tell India the game belonged here. We showed them it was already in their blood. The campaign was a study in movement. It involved painstakingly photographing candid, authentic snapshots of Indian life across the length and breadth of the country and zeroing in on the movements that came closest to emulating the signature dunks of the most valuable players of the NBA. We chose black and white photography to create an impact and hone in on the motions and expressions of the children. This photography style also enabled us to keep the focus on NBA and tell a singular, powerful story, in an otherwise colourful and cluttered Indian landscape. The campaign was shot by a renowned Indian photographer, known for his skills in capturing the gritty moments and finer nuances of life.
