To launch PlayStation’s global campaign “It Happens on PS5” in Spain, we turned one of Madrid’s most iconic public spaces into a real-world entertainment event.
A mysterious PlayStation spaceship appeared to have crashed into Puerta del Sol, transforming one of the country’s busiest and most symbolic transport stations into a scene from the PS5 universe. A place normally defined by routine, commuting and urban flow suddenly became a site of discovery, speculation and collective surprise.
The experience began before the crash. In the days leading up to the installation, teaser videos warned of a strange sighting over the city, building intrigue and giving the audience the first clues that something impossible was about to happen. Then, when the spaceship finally appeared in Sol, the story expanded through a short film released by three of Spain’s most influential gaming and entertainment creators: TheGrefg, Xokas and Ampeter. Their role was not just to amplify the campaign, but to help reveal the fictional causes of the crash and pull the gaming community into the narrative.
From there, the campaign became a transmedia experience. Objects that had travelled inside the spaceship were said to have been lost across Madrid after the impact, inviting fans and passers-by to take part in a citywide search. The audience was no longer just watching a campaign; they were helping complete the story.
The idea was simple: instead of telling people that impossible things happen on PS5, PlayStation would prove it. By bringing fiction into one of Spain’s most recognizable public locations, the campaign blurred the line between the world inside the console and the world outside it.
What began as an outdoor installation became urban branded content, social storytelling, creator entertainment and public participation. A station became a crash site. A commute became an event. A product message became a story people could see, share and join.
With The Spaceship that Crashed in Sol, PlayStation transformed a global brand platform into a local cultural phenomenon, proving that PS5 worlds do not just live on screen. They can break into real life, take over the city and become part of culture.
