Motivated by World Rugby’s ‘Where We Belong’, an initiative focused on creating opportunities for women in sport, it was appropriate to create a sports graphic package that enabled female creative expression and played its part in the progression toward gender parity, in both sport and global design. We selected 16 leading female illustrators and artists from each of the 16 competing nations to each create a static artwork celebrating the spirit of rugby and their own national identity. Each artwork was developed, composited and animated into a unique title sequence and the sports package to champion a bold social purpose.
Brief and Solution
Briefed to deliver a title sequence that ‘honours the spirit of rugby, the unity of women and appeals to younger audiences', it was appropriate to create a sequence by 16 leading female illustrators and artists, one from each of the 16 competing nations. Aside from building anticipation, the sequence authentically represents international women's rugby via the lens of female artists, to quote Clara Bacou our English collaborator, “It’s inspiring to be part of such a diverse creative team. I can’t wait to watch our individual pieces flow into one powerful, unified celebration of women’s rugby.”
Making Of
Each artwork was created by the artist using their favoured medium; from hand-drawn, 3D, illustration, painting, mosaic, graphic design to tattoo art. The only caveat was to place the shape of the tournament logomark at the centre to connect each piece once the sequence was in motion. After months of collaboration, 16 artworks were selected, art-directed, reworked, refined and completed. With Adobe Suite and Cinema 4D, the finished artworks were placed into a timeline, then deconstructed into layers, animated and composited seamlessly together with motion graphic suggestions from each artist.
Cultural Context
Since women’s sport is in a period of hyper-growth, female cultural progression was purposefully initiated in this project from concept to execution. The 16 female artists selected to collaborate on the project helped to create an animation which inherently set it apart from the standard overtly masculine, action-driven contact sport title sequences. International female creative collaboration enabled delivery of a truly authentic celebration of women, rugby, diversity, art and culture. Our aim was for the creative to reinforce progression towards parity in female sport and design in itself.
