Juan Gabriel was one of Mexico’s most beloved cultural icons. But behind the legend was Alberto Aguilera, the private man few people really knew. Netflix’s documentary revealed that untold story through never-before-seen footage, candid interviews and restored performances. But instead of launching it like a traditional documentary, Netflix turned the story into a cultural experience. The idea was simple: before asking Mexico to discover Alberto, make the country feel Juan Gabriel again. Netflix restored and remastered his legendary 1990 concert at Palacio de Bellas Artes, the performance that broke cultural barriers by bringing popular Mexican music into the country’s most prestigious classical venue. Then it brought the concert to the Zócalo, the symbolic heart of Mexico, as a free, open-to-all event. The event became Netflix’s largest live experience at a single venue and one of the 15 most-attended events in the Zócalo’s history, despite the artist not being physically present. More importantly, it transformed collective emotion into curiosity about Alberto’s story on Netflix. The documentary ranked #1 on Netflix Mexico for two weeks and remained in the Global Top 10 for eight weeks.
