Almost every day, James Kamau posts content online. And nearly every day, someone tells him he isn't real.
He’s a Kenyan content creator born with six fingers on each hand. Since AI made six fingers the internet's universal tell for a fake image, his own comment sections have included people insisting he's generated, that he's hiding a finger somewhere, that hands like his can't exist. His replies are often along the lines of: "I'm not AI, I'm a real guy."
Windhoek Beer has been South Africa's 100% Real beer for over 100 years, brewed to Reinheitsgebot purity laws using only barley, hops and water. In a feed full of AI-generated people and impossibly perfect products, that claim needed proving rather than just stating.
So we sent James a DM asking whether he'd like to work with us. He said yes, and became Windhoek's first ever hand model.
His hands went up on posters holding the bottle, with a QR code to his real story. A documentary followed him from his life in Kenya to his first trip out his country, for the shoot in South Africa. We built him a social six-finger sticker pack so he could answer his doubters online. Every piece of the campaign pointed people back to his real story.
James got an even bigger global audience and a lot of media PR. Windhoek got the most convincing proof of its own realness it has ever had, and this led to it committing to a formal pledge – to not use AI-generated people or products in its advertising.
Because when your beer's 100% real, your ads should be too.
