The casting brief was almost impossible: find a content creator who could become a hand model, whose real hands look fake, based in Africa.
AI has made six fingers the internet's universal tell for a generated image, so anyone with six fingers gets accused of not existing. That's daily life for James Kamau, a Kenyan content creator born with six fingers on each hand, whose comment sections often have people insisting he's AI, that he's hiding a finger, that hands like his can't be real.
We found him where the argument was already happening. What made him right for the film went beyond his hands. James had been answering his doubters for years with humour and total self-possession, insisting that: "I'm not AI, I'm a real guy."
Windhoek Beer has been South Africa's 100% Real beer for over 100 years, brewed to Reinheitsgebot purity laws using only barley, hops and water. So we asked James whether he'd like to be its first ever hand model. He said yes.
Working with a renowned documentary team, the film was shot in Kenya first, among his friends, before following his first trip out of his country to the shoot in South Africa. He talks about realising he was different, about online commentors, about what it means to be told you're not real. He's funny throughout, and never at his own expense.
A creator with no acting background carries the entire film and campaign, and does it by being who he already was.
James got an extended global platform and a lot of positive PR. Windhoek got a pledge it now writes into every partner contract, never to use AI-generated people or products in its advertising.
Because when your beer's 100% real, your ads should be too.
