Gen Z underindexed on mayonnaise and gravitated toward bolder, flavored condiments. Garlic Aioli was designed for that shift in taste, but sales had flatlined.
We needed to give Hellmann’s Garlic Aioli a new role in Gen Z culture, one that could spark awareness and conversation while bringing more people to the product. Research revealed that flavored-condiment buyers also overindexed for reading, particularly romance novels, leading us to BookTok: a creator-led community where fans do more than consume stories. They review, debate, theorize and expand them.
Within BookTok, Vampire Romantasy was surging. Garlic’s timeless role in vampire lore gave Hellmann’s a natural way into the fandom. Rather than interrupting the community with advertising, we partnered with bestselling Vampire Romantasy author Jennifer L. Armentrout to create something fans would genuinely want to experience: the world’s first garlic-scented book.
We transformed Armentrout’s new release The Primal of Blood and Bone into a limited-edition “Vampire-Proof” version printed with custom garlic-infused ink. Hellmann’s Garlic Aioli became part of the story, not just a product placement, but a piece of vampire-world lore.
The author partnership brought instant credibility to the idea, but BookTok creators brought it to life. Coffin-shaped mailers containing the garlic-scented book, Garlic Aioli and themed recipes were seeded without scripts, required talking points or prescribed reactions. The physical artifact became the creative prompt, allowing creators to smell it, unbox it, review it, debate it and interpret it in their own voices.
That freedom turned one branded collaboration into many creator-led stories. Audiences joined with reactions and theories across social platforms, while Hellmann’s participated in the fandom’s language and tone rather than controlling the narrative.
With $0 paid media, Bestsmeller generated 1.6 billion earned impressions, 850+ media placements and 2.4 million organic social impressions. Product awareness increased 43%, Garlic Aioli sales rose 88% within four weeks and unit sales increased 17.5% year over year. The Primal of Blood and Bone also debuted at #2 on The New York Times Bestseller list.
