Heinz Rival Wipes are limited-edition napkins created in the rival team's colours and logos. What’s unique about Rival Wipes is that they are made from the official opponent team jersey the Montréal Canadiens were facing during their three Stanley Cup Playoff rounds. A local seamstress worked around the clock before each playoff round to deliver as many Rival Wipes as possible to Habs (and) Heinz Ketchup fans.
The wipes were distributed on game days directly at Bell Centre, the Montréal Canadiens’ home arena (where Heinz is the main condiment sponsor with dozens of condiment kiosks by food stalls), in the biggest NHL watch party in front of the arena, as well as in hundreds of local sports bars and restaurants across Quebec. By reframing a basic utility item, the humble paper napkin, into an act of petty fan rivalry, Heinz turned potential ketchup stains into a culturally relevant, highly shareable physical asset that bridged food culture with sports fandom and rivalry.
