Women’s basketball has never been more popular. It has also never been more hostile. As viewership hit a record 54 million, players faced online harassment at three times the rate of male athletes, with four in five abusive messages containing sexually explicit content. The Chicago Sky wanted to show fans that while hate is a choice, so is support. To make the point land, we found the least likely partner: The Wieners Circle, the Chicago hot dog stand built on a 40-year tradition of insulting its own customers. On Mental Health Night, Wieners Circle staff took over the jumbotron all game long. No insults. Just real praise for Sky players. After the final buzzer, fans lined up outside the stand to trade a message of support for a free Chicago Dog, handed over by Sky players working the counter, who personally accepted the positive messages. The campaign drove an estimated 1.2 million social impressions. Positive sentiment on Chicago Sky posts rose 28%. And most importantly, hateful comments dropped 33%. Proving that if Chicago's meanest mouths can choose support over hate, anyone can.
