Women’s Sport Had the Audience. We Built the Marketplace.
Women’s sport had never been more visible. Stadiums were filling, audiences were growing and athletes were becoming cultural icons. It was a defining moment for women’s sport in the UK, as national attention built toward a landmark summer of major competitions. Yet the businesses designing for its fans and players were still struggling to reach the high street, being turned away by mainstream retail, while fans had no dedicated space of their own to shop, gather and experience the sports they loved.
Mastercard had spent 25 years investing in women’s sport. But as attention accelerated, the opportunity was to turn that commitment into something more tangible: to prove that women’s sport was not only an audience opportunity, but a commercial one.
So instead of simply advertising around the summer, Mastercard created Style Of Our Own, a first-of-its-kind women’s sport retail and cultural destination on Regent Street. For five months, it brought together 47 women-led businesses, Mastercard’s sponsorship portfolio, more than 200 events and thousands of fans in one connected ecosystem, turning the growing momentum around women’s sport into footfall, engagement and commercial opportunity.
The results demonstrated demand at every level. Style Of Our Own welcomed 75,000 visitors, generated 2.35 billion in reach and almost 500,000 online engagements, while Mastercard brand engagement increased by 33%. For participating businesses, 96% increased awareness, 84% built valuable new business connections and 75% reported feeling more investable.
Most importantly, Style Of Our Own proved the effectiveness of creating infrastructure around an emerging category, rather than simply communicating within it. It gave fans somewhere to spend, businesses somewhere to grow and Mastercard a tangible role in connecting the two. In a summer defined by record attention for women’s sport, Mastercard helped demonstrate that attention could translate into measurable value.
