Many Australians delay eye tests because declining vision happens gradually and often goes unnoticed. Fact is, the issue wasn’t awareness. It was self-awareness.
The Hidden Eye Test is a world-first Out of Home campaign that uses typography as a diagnostic device. Instead of telling people they needed an eye test, the campaign showed them through type that behaved differently depending on the viewer’s eyesight.
A bespoke typographic system was designed so hidden messages were only revealed when viewed with impaired eyesight, while remaining visually cohesive for those with clear sight. Letterforms were constructed using layered high- and low-frequency visual information and meticulous composition, allowing text to disappear or emerge based on how the eye perceived contrast and detail.
Developed in collaboration with optometrists and AI artists, the typography was refined over 12 months through extensive testing to ensure the illusion met diagnostic standards.
By turning letterforms into a functional tool for self-discovery, The Hidden Eye Test pushed typography beyond readability into behaviour, redefining what type can do in the physical world.
