Dove Code - The code for real beauty 20 years of Dove's commitment with Real Beauty redefined AI’s portrayal of women forever. Twenty years ago, Dove launched its first Real Beauty campaign, challenging imposed beauty standards. Today, social media is an integral part of women’s daily lives but also serves as a source of pressure and anxiety regarding self-image. Studies show that one in three women feel compelled to alter her appearance due to unrealistic beauty standards online. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) further complicates this, as AI-generated imagery often reinforces hyper-sexualized, stereotypical, and unrealistic ideals. In fact, it is projected that by 2025, 90% of online content will be AI-generated. Amid this reality, Dove saw an opportunity to subvert the system’s logic: what if AI could learn from the concept of Real Beauty? Using two decades of consistent strategy celebrating diverse beauty in all its forms, Dove leveraged its legacy of over 2,800 global campaigns depicting more than 14,000 real women of various backgrounds, body shapes, skin tones, and ages. But could this consistency actually influence artificial intelligence? This is how The Dove Code was born — a campaign that subverted AI’s logic with a simple adjustment to the prompts used in generative tools, encouraging the creation of more authentic representations. By changing a generic prompt like “imagine a beautiful woman” to “imagine a beautiful woman according to Dove,” AI began generating images reflecting the plurality championed by the brand, showing women of different races, body types, and ages, all influenced by Dove’s consistent strategic work. With a global campaign across more than 30 countries, Dove transformed AI into a tool for inclusion and redefined beauty in the digital era, impacting millions of people worldwide. The campaign garnered over 500 million organic views globally for “The Dove Code” film and generated extensive media coverage, making it Dove’s most widely discussed campaign to date. It achieved over 4 billion organic impressions and 94% positive sentiment. Dove’s "Real Beauty Prompt Guidelines" were downloaded more than 10,000 times, equipping brands and media outlets with actionable tools for more inclusive AI representations. This initiative solidified Dove’s leadership in redefining beauty standards for AI, inspiring other brands and platforms to adopt more inclusive approaches.
