Background
In 2023, approximately 4.83 billion prescriptions were written in the U.S., yet 73% of Americans dispose of medications improperly. Many flush them or throw them away, causing environmental contamination that harms waterways, aquatic life, and human health. The root cause is a lack of awareness about safe disposal. As the largest U.S. pharmacy chain, CVS Pharmacy can educate consumers and promote sustainability.
Insight
Despite their small size, prescription medications pose significant risks, often underestimated, leading to low disposal rates. People typically treat them like regular waste, unaware of the dangers of improper disposal. Shifting this perception and promoting safer practices can encourage small actions that protect the environment.
Idea
CVS ColorAlert Label is a time-sensitive, color-changing label on prescription bottles that visually indicates when medication is nearing expiration, prompting safe disposal.
Execution
By integrating time-sensitive, polymer-based color-changing labels on prescription bottles, CVS ColorAlert Label offers a clear solution for safe medication disposal. The label shifts from green (fresh) to yellow (near expiration) to red (expired), prompting users to dispose of medications. Users can scan a QR code to schedule a return via the CVS App or find a nearby CVS safe medication disposal kiosk, earning points that can be redeemed for products or donated to marine conservation, promoting responsible disposal and sustainability.
