For decades, film captions were treated as a basic utility. A functional service, but emotionally flat. They lacked timing, tone, speaker clarity, and nuance, leaving millions of Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers with a lesser version of the cinematic experience.
Caption with Intention reimagines that reality, and it did so through deep, cross-disciplinary partnerships.
Led by Rakish Entertainment in collaboration with the Chicago Hearing Society and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the project created a new visual language for captions. Words animate in sync with dialogue. Typography shifts in size and weight to reflect tone and volume. Color coding differentiates speakers. Every choice from typeface to timing was crafted to convey not just what’s being said, but how, when, and by whom.
Over 10 months, the system was shaped by a 125-person panel from the Deaf community whose feedback influenced every element of design. Here, production, advocacy, and cultural authority joined forces to turn accessibility into artistry, and utility into empathy.
