“The Snowball” is a short, animated film that tells the story of a man and a drinking habit that literally snowballs out of control.
The song we chose, “Everything I Have is Yours,” sung by Grammy Hall of Famer Billie Holiday, brings an added depth and dimension to the storytelling. Holiday’s haunting words tell of someone who gives themselves over completely to someone else.
It begins “Everything I have is yours / You're part of me / Everything I have is yours / My destiny” and ends, “I'll be happy just to spend my life / Waiting at your beck and call / Everything I have is yours / My life / My all.”
In “The Snowball,” our main character unwittingly gives everything in his life—including his wife and child—to alcohol. He almost gives “his life, his all.”
Holiday’s voice doesn’t just narrate the film, though. It resides within: It plays inside the bar as our character first enters. It echoes inside the giant snowball after it engulfs our main character, becoming our character’s crushing inner thought. And it resolves as our character realizes what’s most important in his life.
What makes this recording even more poignant is that Billie Holiday herself died as a result of cirrhosis from drugs and alcohol. Her words are a true reminder for everyone to be aware of their intake before it’s too late.
