Necaxa is a documentary series that follows the Mexican football team Club Necaxa as it fights to reclaim its status as one of Mexico’s top teams. Mexican-American owner Eva Longoria enlists high-profile allies including co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to revitalize the club.
In developing the graphics package, we drew inspiration from the bold stripes of the team’s uniform and its striking red-and-white palette as our starting point. Stripes of varying sizes, widths and curvatures, along with the team’s lightning bolt insignia “Los Rayos” are illustrated with a distinctly hand-hewn quality. The bold stripes, when reduce in scale and stretched out, become contour lines that define the faces of the team’s key characters. Altogether, this approach gives the design a cohesive yet authentic, crafted feel.
Illustrations of iconic aqueducts and churches help establish the unique character and history of Aguascalientes. In animation, these architectural elements enhance the spatial depth, add motion parallax and bring dynamism to the 2D technique. Building off the hand-crafted approach, textural reveals are infused into the transitions to bring the characters to life.
