Many LGBTQ+ artists are some of the most influential voices in music, selling out stadiums and racking up billions of streams on Spotify. Yet around 40% of people worldwide hold homophobic views - despite their massive popularity, the voices of queer artists are still at risk of being silenced due to social prejudice.
To show what an empty and quiet music world would be like without them, songs by LGBTQ+ artists were muted on Spotify for one day. To regain access, listeners shared the campaign on social media along with their own queer music listening stats. Offline, interactive karaoke billboards invited people to sing songs by Sam Smith, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, and other LGBTQ+ artists, symbolically amplifying their voices.
The campaign achieved wide organic reach, attracting new listeners and increasing visibility for LGBTQ+ musicians.
