Breastmilk Money is a digital savings initiative that supports women’s health by turning breastfeeding into measurable financial value. Built inside the Herconomy mobile banking app, it allows Nigerian mothers to calculate how much money they save by breastfeeding instead of purchasing formula and deposit that amount directly into savings. Using WHO intake averages and live local formula prices, the milk to money calculator generates a personalized monthly figure. With one tap, mothers can transfer the exact amount into a dedicated Breastmilk Money account and earn 14.3 percent interest, inspired by documented developmental benefits linked to exclusive breastfeeding. In a context where breastfeeding is often stigmatized and formula is marketed as aspirational, Breastmilk Money reframes care work as wealth and health as something worth protecting and investing in. Launched during Women’s Month, the work was supported by a short film, social education with medical professionals, live demonstrations, events, and out of home placements. Beyond awareness, it provided women with a practical tool to sustain healthy behavior while building financial resilience.
