LEGO's incredible success led to a unique challenge - ensuring consistency and connectivity across their diverse and ever-growing worlds. To deliver a more connected ecosystem, we dove into the LEGO archives to understand what makes the brand so special.
The solution was to build a full LEGO set of elements that could build cohesion and unlock creativity.
The main asset is the 'Clutch System' based on the brick itself. LEGO Brick Pro enables building anything digitally, functioning as a font (or 130 glyphs).
This font can be used to quickly build crazy shapes, illustrations, and UI elements using the same geometry as the bricks. The result is a branded visual representation of the iconic System-in-Play. Just like the brick, you can now build anything imaginable in a familiar and ownable way.
Another major part of the refreshed LEGO brand is the first global brand font, LEGO Typewell, which is now available in 120 languages.
We utilized the classic characteristics of the brick and replicated its angles and curves throughout. When the font is used in any communication, it automatically feels like LEGO, even if the logo isn't visible.
The final unique trait of the font is flat vertical edges. This quirk was originally found on a box deep in the LEGO archive. By using flat edges, it makes the font feel pushed together, much like the suction of the bricks themselves.
Finally, to encourage usage of the system, a series of posters were created that would be displayed in LEGO offices to inspire employees to use the new elements in creative ways. We took LEGO franchise characters and remade a series of iconic film posters that showed an inventive combination of the new elements.
