UN Secretary General António Guterres coined the term “global boiling” to describe rising temperatures caused by climate change. According to the World Health Organization, 2.4 billion people worldwide are forced to work under dangerous heat, while extreme temperatures have already cost an estimated 500 billion working hours globally (Lancet Countdown, 2024).
Japan’s agricultural industry has been particularly affected, putting 1.2 million outdoor workers at risk of heatstroke. Sumitomo Metal Mining, a Japanese mining company with over 400 years of history, found a solution in Cesium-doped Tungsten Oxide (CWO), a material it invented two decades ago. Originally developed for automotive and architectural glass, it absorbs near-infrared light to block heat without relying on electricity or fossil fuels.
We believed that applying this technology directly to the human body, rather than to spaces, could redefine sustainability in the age of climate change. Protecting people working outdoors under extreme heat is essential to sustaining both the environment and physical livelihoods.
To increase visibility, CWO was rebranded as SOLAMENT™, a technology designed to protect human activity under extreme heat. The mining company then launched a clothing line.
HOPE WEAR is a heat-resistance workwear line utilizing SOLAMENT™ to enable outdoor work without additional energy consumption. SOLAMENT™ absorbs and traps near-infrared light on the fabric surface, physically preventing heat transfer to the body. Combined with built-in fans, HOPE WEAR reduces perceived temperature by up to 19°C.
Using an advanced 3D pattern algorithm that reduces fabric waste by up to 60%, the design also improves sustainability.
HOPE WEAR has the potential to save 65 million+ outdoor working hours this summer. It is expanding beyond agriculture into logistics, construction, and railway sectors, with discussions underway with one of Japan’s largest railway companies. In late 2025, SOLAMENT™ expanded into children’s clothing and traditional Japanese garments, with product development currently under exploration. In 2026, SOLAMENT™ products are designated as eligible for agricultural subsidies by government programs in Japan, positioning HOPE WEAR as part of a nationwide heat mitigation initiative.
