Nathan’s Famous has been New York’s hot dog since 1916, but during the summer grilling season, they needed to cut through in a way that was authentic to their roots. So when the New York Subway (MTA) released its first new map design in nearly 50 years, we spotted something: a hot dog, formed by the chance convergence of the N, F, and Q lines at Coney Island—the birthplace of Nathan’s Famous.
So, we added a mustard squiggle to the subway map. A simple, culturally relevant way to transform a coincidence into the unforgettable image of a hot dog. We knew once people saw it, they couldn’t unsee it.
We launched on National Hot Dog Day, partnering with the MTA to bring the hot dog map into stations, subway cars, and even onto seats decorated with mustard. The design spread fast through earned media, social coverage, and influencer engagement—including the viral reach of the hot-take internet icon, @SubwayTakes.
