People don't pay attention to safety videos. And we Filipinos are no exception. But one thing keeps us glued to the screen: Telenovelas. Dominating Philippine primetime for decades, these melodramatic soap operas reflect the social realities of Filipinos and shape local pop culture. We grew up switching between channels just to catch two telenovelas at the same time, even having dedicated TV screens at restaurants. Finales are live events thousands would flock to watch together. And this didn't change in the age of streaming. According to the Digital 2024 Global Overview Report, Filipinos are top consumers of online video content and among the highest in average screen time consumption. And for millions of overseas Filipino workers who fly Philippine Airlines (PAL), the telenovela is an important connection to home. Introducing the SAFETYNOVELA: the first-ever safety video that’s a full-on telenovela. Packed with drama, confrontations, and heartbreaking tears to keep passengers watching until the very end. We created a dramatic narrative that seamlessly followed the exact sequence of safety guidelines set by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. With critically acclaimed film director Marius Talampas, we brought it to life in a way that stayed true to Filipino soap operas. Starring real telenovela actors, featuring period-accurate wardrobe and production design, as well as music scored and performed specially for the production. And like any telenovela, we created an entire entertainment experience. We launched the trailer in the Metro Manila Film Festival and on iWant, the country’s top streaming app for Filipino telenovelas. The full piece premiered aboard PAL's newest A350-1000, then across the entire fleet, supported by telenovela-style safety billboards in airports and presence on IMDB and Letterboxd. When people asked for more, we answered them with extra chapters on social. The Safetynovela generated over 32 million views, 495 million total reach across more than 100 countries, and 17% increase in online bookings. It earned praise from telenovela directors and actors, Grammy-nominated artist Charlie Puth, and Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. It inspired organic content worldwide, from reaction videos and film analyses to fan art and TikTok fan edits. By tapping into a format beloved by a whole nation, the Safetynovela didn't just capture hearts. It held our attention, all the way to the final safety instructions.
