Five Minutes and Over
Rare, Well Done began almost three years ago as a creative dare: could we make a reality makeover show for people living with rare diseases good enough to make it as a TV series on mainstream TV? (In Hollywood pitch-speak, think: ‘Queer Eye or Extreme Home Makeover for rare disease communities.’) We started small and focused, initially centering on the Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) community and running it digitally. Then we showed it to NBCUniversal and they were interested. (Like, really interested.) For nearly two years, we went back and forth crafting a plan that made sense for NBCU and our clients. We launched a 30-minute test episode on COZI TV, a national cable network featuring classic TV shows that the CIDP community was already tuned into. The results were mind-blowing—more than half a million people tuned in in just four airings. Not only did we attract a huge portion of the CIDP community, but people across the entire rare disease community started asking when we’d do an episode about their condition. We put another episode on Peacock, NBCU’s premium streaming platform. Higher profile. Bigger impact. Now, nearly 3 years later, we’ve arrived at a seismic shift for our industry. We’re working on plans to make Rare, Well Done a full series for a spectrum of rare diseases. It just goes to show you; a little perseverance mixed with compelling human stories makes for great TV.
