During the 2026 Summer Of Soccer, 86% of weekday games were airing during U.S. work hours, forcing American soccer fans to choose between their jobs and the beautiful game. Heineken found the loophole hiding in plain sight: Volunteer Time Off (VTO), a paid benefit 84% of U.S. companies already offer and most employees never think to use.
Fan Volunteers turned that dormant benefit into the ultimate solution to watch soccer. Heineken partnered with 17 nonprofit organizations to show the games at their volunteer locations, matching volunteer shifts with game times so fans could use their VTO to do good and watch the games at the same time.
Backed by a satirical "corporate training" film that taught fans exactly how to request the time off, manager email template included). The platform first came to life in New York City and Miami during the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals: fans packed 3,250 meals for a local food pantry serving 2,000+ New Yorkers in need and clearing 3,100 square feet of green space at Miami's Virginia Key Beach.
The campaign then rolled out nationwide for the 2026 World Cup, earning 1,981 total volunteer sign-ups for activations matched to match days, 15,848 hours of VTO taken and 94 volunteer events across the country.
With Fan Volunteers, Heineken helped thousands of American soccer fans find a loophole that let them give back to their communities, make new friends, and never miss a match – all while still getting paid by their employers.
