[Bringing Lost History to Life Through AI Sound]
‘Hearing 1945’ is an immersive sound experience restored with AI, recreating the roar of August 15, 1945, Liberation Day, when Korea regained freedom from Japanese rule. Because audio recording technology had fallen behind under colonial rule, the sounds of that day were never preserved. Only texts and photographs remain.
To restore the sound from 80 years ago, the sound was not just AI-generated; it went through historical accuracy verification without any embellishments. Every sonic clue, from on-site noise to period accents, was cataloged with keywords. Using these keywords, individual sound elements were generated and mixed after simulations reflecting crowd size and environment.
For the 80th anniversary of liberation, ‘Hearing 1945’ was released in special theaters, allowing audiences to experience the moment as if present in 1945. Two history museums also displayed the immersive sound exhibitions, renewing the meaning of Liberation Day.
